Thoughts on Terrorism

Has Terrorism really affected our lives today? If so, do you think it has made a big impact on our lives here in Singapore?

Terrorism activities around the globe sure has stir up the sense of urgency towards the people around the world.Since the frequent terrorism activities occur a few years back, every country now has been on high alert.People around the world now still live their normal everyday life, but with that weee bit of fear for having the possibility of being attacked. At the same time, our lives here in Singapore is still the same, especially to the younger generation. They dont seem to care much about the terrorism that has been happening. The government has made a lot of changes to the safety of the country. They have stepped up the safety precaution, while also warning its citizens to be wary.Terrorism sure has made an impact, but i dont think it has made a big impact on our lives here in Singapore. *`(Muhd Farhan B Hassan)~*

Yes, I agree that terrorism has affected our lives in one way or another. However, has it been a big impact in our lives? I'm afraid no, at least for me. i agree with what muhd farhan has mentioned. Let's be honest with ourselves, we live in Singapore which we thought and believed to be safe, at least until now. If you take a walk down at the park and the street or even busy Orchard Road or City Hall, do the people look like they are fearful of being the next target or losing a love one? To me, they are only concern if they are food on the table tonight. I'm not saying that their concern is wrong, just that only the government are more mindful and aware about terrorism than the people themselves. I feel that the only impact they are feeling is the economic decline due to terrorism and not living in fear.

However, if I am in London now, maybe it will all be a different story. I can only pray that Singaporeans don't learn it the hard way.

Hi! Thanks for your comments. Do you think terrorism has affected race relationships in Singapore? Do you think people are more wary of malay muslims for example? How about in other parts of the world?

Yang Jinlong said...

Yes, it has make a impact in our life, but only a small portion i am afraid. The government is the one that is being affected the most.

In singapore i don't think that the malay muslim are being treated as terrorist or dangers at all. This is due to the government emphasis on racial harmony, they had build a foundation for the races in singapore.

Whereas in other countries, the situation might differ as the bonding between races is not as strong as compared to singapore. Just for exameple, in malaysia, the malays and the chinese is not in very good relation. The chinese might felt that they are potential terrorists.

Yes but to a certain extent only because it only makes more Singaporeans wary of the current situation on this Earth. Other than that majority just carry on with their usual daily life activities. However even if Singapore is claimed to be a safe country there might be those that are trying to plot attacks here so mostly everyone takes extra precautions.

I'm sure terrorism has impacted the world. Bombings in Bali, the 9/11 incident have all thrown the world into distress. Governments have heightened security, increased checks at airports, even in Singapore, advertisments about terrorism and to be on the alert are widespread. The government even organised a drill in various MRT stations to guage efficiency of our Civil Defense Force and the alertness of our citizens.

But has it really affected our lives in Singapore? Not on a personnal level I feel. If we look around us we do not see people who are at all concerned if they are ever going to be killed by a terrorist. We can say that Singaporeans may be taking things for granted but that in itself is not a bad thing. Why should we worry about something that may or may not happen. We have to be on alert yes but at the same time have to carry on with our daily lives and not be driven to obsession.

Though terrorism certainly has made an impact and nations have been driven to high alert, we should know our role in this as ordinary citizens. Play our part and stay alert yes, but at the same time be constantly moving forward not letting such events deter us.

I agree that terrorism has definately affected our lives for various reasons. However, I dont feel that it has big imact in our lives.

Take for example ourselves, or the youths. If we see anything suspicious or whatsoever, do we take it seriously or do we make a joke out of it pretending to be the suspicious guy who left it there just because we feel that it is really safe here in Singapore?

I agree to what Farhan and Jia Hui mentioned. How many times have you seen teenagers with their friends in the MRT pretending to place a bomb underneath the chair and acting all suspicious. If the situation was just like the one in London whereby the public was bombed by suicide bombers, it would have been a really different story.

Yes, terrorism has indeed affected our lives, however i do not think that it has such a big impact on singaporeans.

Being in singapore, we have yet to face any terror attacks(of course i do not hope for one), thus we cannot be sure how terrorism really affect our lifes.

However, it does affect us a little as singapore is readily training the citizens in case terrorist's attacked.

Yes, I agree that terrorism has indeed affected our lives in one way or another. However, the scale of the impact of terrorism is not as large as compared to other countries in the West such as America or United Kingdom.

Other than some minor inconveniences, I feel that terrorism has not altered the lifestyle of most Singaporeans in any way. Post September 11, the Government heightened security at our airport and MRT stations, and we may all be subjected to random security checks. The Government has also conducted random anti-terrorist drills in our heartlands and in the city to get Singaporeans better prepared for such terrorist attacks. Other than these small inconveniences, I believe Singaporeans are still living their normal lives and going about doing their daily activities without the fear of terrorist attacks in our country.

However, I feel that Singaporeans maybe taking our personal safety for granted. We all think that our Government have put in sufficient measures to keep the terrorists at bay and that we are all safe from attacks. I believe we are all over-reliant on our Government and it is this kind of mindset that will make us susceptible to these external threats. Some Singaporeans also have this mindset that terrorism will only occur in our countries other than ours. However, the recent Bali bombings have shown that terrorism can also occur close to home and no country is safe from terrorist attacks.

I also feel that terrorism has not affected inter-racial relationship in Singapore at all. Other than a few black sheep that makes snide remarks at other races, I believe that Singaporeans are generally a sensitive lot. This can be attributed to the Government's constant emphasis on racial and religious harmony. However, the same cannot be said for some other countries, where racial tolerance may not be as high. Take for example in the United States, a percentage of American Muslims were discriminate against and Americans have a misconception that Muslims are terrorists.

Hence, I feel terrorism has affected our lives in one way or another and the war on terrorism will be a long fight. However, as long as Singaporeans stay united as one and exercise racial and religious harmony, it will certainly keep the impact of terrorism to the minimal.

Terrorism in the modern sense is violence or other harmful acts committed against civilians for political or other ideological goals. For the past few years, terrorism have caused great misery and impact on human kind. People all around the world have been living in fear of being attacked by terrorists. Nevertheless, governments have carried out safety measures to protect innocent civilian from harm. Of course, there is no way to stop terrorism from occurring unless all the saddists in the world perish. The only way government could do is to try their very best to prevent terrorist threats. Therefore, we must brace ourselves to live on peacefully. No point worrying about it, as we have done what we could do.

In Singapore, things are slightly different from places which have been 'raided' by terrorists. The Singapore government emphasize greatly on the security of Singaporeans. People carrying bulky articles into MRT stations are also suspected of carrying out terrorist activities, and need to be checked. However, most of us(Singaporeans) are ignorant of the fact that terrorism may occur as we have lived our lives in peace. Our lives will change if terrorism was to happen in Singapore. Let's pray that we will all be safe and sound.

I think that terrorism has affected our lives greatly, but not directly.
The collasp Twin Tower during Sept 11 has seen the worlds economy drop greatly. And as Singapore deals very close relationship with the USA, there has been a drastic drop in our trade and manufacturing sector since a portion of our trade and some manufacturing materials are imported from USA.
Also the Bali bombing also shows That terrorism is at our doorstep. This made many citizens live in fear and anxiety.

Terrorism has deffinately affected our lives mainly in the aspects of privacy and secuirity. However it is not to the extent where we are constanly looking over our shoulders for terrorist or fearing that the next train might have an explosive surprise waiting for us. This has mainly been because well we have had no cases so far and well most of us would be thinking how on earth can Singapore be at risk?
Well although we have been prety safe so far that does not mean we are not at risk. The fact that we are multi racial comunity puts us at risk. Also our close ties with the United Sttes who never fail to stick their noses int everyones war might also make us a target in the future. Besides this being neighbours with Indonesia who recently have been bombarded with well bombs every other month also requires us to take up neccasary caution.
Because of all of this i hope that we will be very thankfull for our peace and harmony so far and do nothing to jepordize it.

Terrorism has tremendously affected our lives, especially in Singapore. Daily, i am bombarded with reminder messages such as to look out for suspicious articles.

When going on a holiday, we think about safety more than we did before the pre 9/11 era. The destination of visit is also greatly influenced by political factors, like internal unrest.

Terrorism has claimed thousands of lives in recent years, but I think that terrorists are not making any good progress. It is a immature, ineffective way for terrorists to reach their desired goals/results.
Nonetheless, we should look out for their presence in our community.

terrorism has surely affect singaporeans in many ways . i disagree that the people of singapore does not seem to care much about terrorism. if so, there wouldnt be such tight security around crowded areas such as train stations and shoppping centres . not to forget the videos being played on trains and on buses about how we should take precautions if an attack should happen.

another factor to prove my point would be the diplomatic ties we have with other countries around the world. since countries in the world are interdependent, everything that is happening to other countries will surely affect singapore in many ways .

for example , the united states and singapore have forged agreements for substantive
cooperation. the U.S. navy has a headquarters in Singapore and
approximately one hundred U.S. ship visits per year are facilitated out
of that office. singapore has also joined the container security initiative
(CSI) and the proliferation security initiative (PSI). commercial
interaction between the two countries is significant, and the two have
signed a far-reaching free trade agreement, america’s first with a
country in Asia. the two countries are also in the midst of negotiating
the Singapore-U.S. strategic framework agreement on defense ties.

therefore, i conclude that terrorism has affected singapore in many ways.

Terrorism has definitely affected our lifes. Singaporeans are too complacent, before such terrorist acts happened, everyone is thinking that singapore is a safe country. However it is not true. But terrorism has serve as an wakeup call to tell singaporeans that nothing is safe. We will no longer hug on the fact that we are always safe and it has raise our alertness and awareness of such acts.

Recalled the yishun bombing inciden. If not for the alertness from a member of the public, a terrible incident could have happened and many lives could have been lost.

Also, many drills are being carried out frequently to prepare us to face all these problems.

So terrorism does affect us in one way or another.

More or less, Terrorism does affect our lives today. However, our Government is more alert and careful. Everyday, we hear the broadcast of the precautions needed to be taken in emergency situations in MRT stations or radio stations.

In Singapore, regardless of race, language or religion, we are united as one. So there is no grudge against our muslim friends. At least not for me. However, i think that in other western country, there are bound to have some prejudice as they do not understand muslims well. Only some of the the muslims uses violence.

Although terrists have not strike in Singapore yet, we must stay alert and vigilant.

Terrorism affected a little on our lives to me. Because I beleive Singapore has a good military defense so I think the chances of Singapore being attack is very slim. With good military defense, Im sure terrorist would think twice to cause harm to Singapore. As Singapore are becoming a much developed country, Im sure the goverment will strengthen thier defense too in order to counter threat from enemies or whoever tries to destroy Singapore. Beside the Military Defense, Singapore also is full of alert people. As Singapore people is well known for it's "kiasu" style, Im sure they will call the emergency hotline to report every single unattended luggages and suspicious people. But terrorism do affect us a little. Especially those who often travels. After the various bombing incidents, the Singapore government tend to tighten the security everywhere especially in Immigration Checkpoints. After many bombing incidents, people tends to wait much more longer to clear the Immigaration.

JOANNE* said...

I disagree with Hanif. First and for most, a developed country does not necessary come with a good military defence.

Even though Singapore does have a good army, it does not lower the chances of terrorist attacks in Singapore. Moreover, Singapore is such a small country, even with the best military defense, it would be a fairly easy job to take over us anytime. As Singapore becomes a more develop country, it is at the same time building ties with many other different countries as well. As such, it is a bigger threat to us as what happens in other bigger and more well developed countries we build tires with will also affect us.

Therefore being develop and having a strong military force does not lower the chances of having terrorism in Singapore in anyway. The tightening of security and awareness of our people is already a way of how terrorism having a affect on our country. Terrorism has surely affected Singapore in many ways at a fairly large extend.
